How Sick Leave Credit Works
- Unused sick leave is converted to additional service time at retirement.
- Credit is given only for full months of service; leftover hours that do not equal a full month are discarded.
- This converted time cannot be used to meet minimum service requirements for eligibility.
- The calculation is based on a 2,087-hour work year.

Strategic Use of Sick Leave
Because leftover hours that don't add up to a full month of service (174 hours) are discarded, you may want to manage your sick leave balance as you approach retirement. For example, if you have 173 leftover hours, they provide zero credit. It could be more beneficial to use that leave before retiring rather than letting the hours expire with no value.
Important Notes
- Sick leave conversion only applies to immediate retirements, not deferred or disability retirements.
- The converted time cannot be used to meet eligibility requirements for retirement (e.g., reaching 30 years of service).
- Annual leave is not converted for service credit; it is paid out as a lump sum. You can estimate this with our Annual Leave Payout Calculator.
